Hannah helped Annie in the kitchen, thankful that she had something to do rather than sit in her room alone with her thoughts.

“Hannah, are you sure you’re up to working so hard?”

“Yes, ma’am. I need something to keep my mind occupied.”

Annie wiped her hands on her apron and gave her a hug. “I still grieve for my Robert. He was such a good man. In time, you’ll want to go on.”

Hannah thanked her but kept her unspoken question to herself. Annie hadn’t remarried. She was an attractive woman and had been quite young when widowed.

Annie put the chicken in the oven. “You know, I thought about remarrying several times. Just couldn’t find the right fella. None of them could match up to my Robert. Think they knew that.”

“He must have been a good man.”

Annie laughed. “He was a man. Not always good, but one thing I knew, he loved me, wholly, and that made up for his wild streak.” She laughed and pulled out the makings for a pie.

Hannah lowered her head. She felt like a fraud. Neither she nor Gunther had given their hearts to one another. Was that why she’d never had a child? Had God withheld giving them children because they hadn’t truly loved one another?

No, that wasn’t true. She knew Ida Spears. The woman had ten kids with her miserable excuse of a man. There was no way she could love Frank Spears.

Annie handed her apples to chop.

Hannah sliced them with vigor. Well, whatever the reason she’d not had children; she needed to get on with her life. She was too young to spend her years alone. Perhaps Dr. Avery wouldn’t be such a bad sort.

Again, Matt’s face filled her mind. Why did she even think of him? Doubtful he and his big uncle would ever come back.

“You seem quiet, Hannah. You really don’t have to help me if you’re not up to it.”

“I’m fine, just a lot on my mind.”

“I saw that tax man talking to you. Did he upset you?”

Hannah shook her head. “He didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. A Minnesota farmer in Texas spells trouble. If we’d gone farther east, where the ground is rich and black, things may have been different. Out here, well you know what it’s like. Poor Gunther.”

“He chose a hard profession for a hard country.”

“The farm and everything on it is gone, now. Funny, I feel free rather than at a loss.”

Annie hugged her. “I’m sorry, dear. God promises everything to work out for the best. Sometimes that’s a little hard to see, though.”

“Yes, it is.” Hannah clammed up. She almost let on how she was really feeling. Not only glad to be free of the farm but from Gunther too. What kind of woman did that make her?

Annie put the apples in a bowl and sprinkled sugar, butter, and molasses over them. “Hannah, if you need to talk, you can trust me. I have a good shoulder to cry on and a good listening ear.
