Rather, Foucault was concerned more with recognising the need to separate the doer from their deeds, so as to understand how the subject is formed at any given time and context. The divide between action and actor has some resonance with the separation between the soul and the body. The self produces subjective readings of the world in a certain context, time and place; and so this is true for his subjective readings of love. The self is the soul, which is a divided being momentarily joined with the body during his lifetime. Foucault works with a model of multiple discursive and non-discursive systems, practices and institutions:

So it is not enough to say that the subject is constituted in a symbolic system. It is not just in the play of symbols that the subject is constituted. It is constituted in real practices – historically analyzable practices. There is a technology of the constitution of the self which cuts across symbolic systems while using them.

(Foucault 1983a: 369)
