Chapter 8

Matt hated Tom. Hated him. How could he do such a lowdown thing? He should have never let Tom go to town. If he’d stopped him, Maggie would be his. She was beautiful, but he could hardly stand to look at her without thinking of her with Tom.

All their lives, he and Chase had to either keep Tom out of trouble or pay for it when they failed. Watch him in town, Matt. Don’t let him go wild. Don’t remind him of Ma and Pa. Well, this trouble wasn’t going away.

As far as he was concerned, he had one brother, Chase. Tom and Maggie could just leave together as soon as it was safe.

Matt stared at Big John. The man was angry. Disappointed. But in who? Should be Tom, but more times than not, Big John took up for him. Well, it didn’t matter. This time, he was not backing down and letting Tom get away without paying for what he’d done.

“I’ll stand watch outside.” Matt grabbed his rifle and headed for the door.

Big John stopped him. “Not on your life. We’re all staying in this cabin. You better settle up with Tom. I saw too many men kill their brothers in that war.”

“Well, if those brothers had done what mine did, they’d understand.”

John shoved him to the window. “Maybe. What you need to do is be a man. Guard this cabin and decide if you meant it when you sent for her. She left her home to come to you. Do you just want to send her out? Have you given one thought about Maggie?”

Matt stared into the black night. Yeah, he’d given plenty of thoughts about Maggie. Ever since she’d answered the ad, he’d thought about her. Built a cabin thinking of her and the cold nights they’d spend together. Yeah, he’d thought about her.

“She married Tom. She made her choice.”

John stared out the window with him and spoke low and soft. “Let her know she has a choice, Matt. Women are special. Soft and mysterious. They need us to take care of them even when they don’t want it. They need us to forgive ’em even when they don’t act like it. Give her time to choose.”

Matt gritted his teeth and glared into the blackness. After a few moments, he turned to John. “I’ll give her a choice, but she needs to know the truth. I asked her out here, but the woman I asked wasn’t married. She was coming for me and not Tom. I’m not sure what I can offer her now. And that’s the honest truth, sir.”

Big John’s face softened as he put a hand on Matt’s shoulder. “That’s all I’m asking, Matt. I’ve found it’s best to let life play out its hand. Sometimes it goes the way you want, sometimes not. But a man stands on what’s right and does what he can to make it right. And even if it doesn’t go his way, he needs to stand for what’s right, for his family, and his honor.
