I haven’t told Jason and Caite that I’ve invited three extra people to our bowling session tomorrow. Hopefully they won’t mind. I figure if I’m going to have Charlotte in my life I may as well start introducing her to my friends.

This afternoon I’ve had a couple vendor meetings – all that went off without a hitch, giving me more local products to offer customers. Local is important to me.

I park in the back alleyway and let myself into my building. I ended up hiring two more bartenders after seeing how busy the place was every night of the week. This way Jason and I don’t have to work every waking second.

Jason worked at the bar when I bought it. Back when it was a dive bar. We bonded quickly and he was more than happy to stay on when I told him my plans. And his wife Caite – according to those two when you friend one of them, the other is a freebie. I won’t complain about it because I’ve grown to love them both. They have become my family away from family.

The place is busy when I walk in. Not quite packed as it’s early in the evening still. But busy enough that it makes me feel like this place is going to make it. I went to business school, because my mom insisted it was a safe bet and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. After managing a bar for someone down in Dallas I decided I could probably own my own bar and be a lot happier than I was working for someone else. I am. I didn’t realize it was quite so much work when it’s your own place but I am definitely happy I did it. As busy as the place is, I think I’ve got a chance to make it here in Portland.

‘I think we’re in for another successful night,’ Jason says as he wipes down the bar.

‘Good,’ I say, leaning against the back counter next to him. ‘You’ll never guess who was at the party I went to with Char last night.’

‘Um… you’ve got a smile on your face so it wasn’t Jenna.’

‘God, no.’ I shake my head hoping I never see Jenna again after the last time. That moment in time was all I needed to remind myself that I’m not still interested in her. She’s as bad at Chris at picking the worst time to make an entrance.

‘Wait a sec… runaway bride girl?’

‘Her name is Parker, but yeah.’

‘Since when is Parker a chick’s name?’

I shrug. ‘I don’t know.’

‘You seem happy to see her again. Things went well with your little friend-zone lady?’

‘I am not stuck in the friend zone because there is no such thing. I like her as a human and we’re friends.’

‘But you hope it leads to more…’

I shake my head. ‘I like her, yes. I’m not going to push her into anything she’s not comfortable with. If she only wants to be friends, that’s just fine because she’s fun.
