The innovative analysis of the drama of Sodom presented by Bechtel has enriched biblical hermeneutics. She is unconvinced by the traditional anti-homoerotic approach to the story (1998a: 22, 29). Nevertheless, Bechtel leaves open the possibility of a veiled sexual threat (pp. 28–33). In her view, the Hebrew verb yada⁽ is likely to have sexual connotations in Genesis 19.5 as well as in 19.8. Bechtel argues that the narrator deliberately imbues the text with threatening insinuations to create a virtually impenetrable veil of ambiguities (1998a: 28). The originality of Bechtel’s analysis of Sodom allows it to include elements of paradigms A (the vulnerable sojourner exposed to social injustice) and B (inhospitality towards outsiders), while paradigm C is present in Bechtel’s admission of sexual innuendo in her interpretation of the verb yada⁽.
