Chapter Eight

“I love my new pony!” Noelle twisted and shoved her stuffed animal in Gracie’s face for the fifth time since the final hymn had been sung in church. Trent made a mental note to have a talk with Noelle about personal boundaries. But Gracie seemed to be taking it like a champ. Noelle sat on her lap and pretended to make the horse trot through the air. The ushers were still letting out the front rows.

He’d taken the spot on the aisle. Emma sat to his right, Sadie sat next to her, with Noelle and Gracie on her other side.

“What are you going to name it?” Gracie whispered.

“I don’t know.” Noelle didn’t lower her voice. “Prancer?”

Emma leaned forward and shook her head. “That’s a reindeer name, Noelle. You can’t name it that.”

“Okay, let’s wait until we’re out of church before naming the horses.” Trent looked around to see if anyone seemed miffed about the girls’ talking. At least all three had been quiet, if squirmy, throughout the service. He realized everyone was chatting with their neighbors. No need to worry.

“You can name your pony anything you want.” Gracie smoothed her hand over Noelle’s hair. Then she turned to Sadie. “What are you naming yours?”

“Moonlight.” She wrapped her arms around the stuffed animal and hugged it tightly.

“I like that name. What made you decide on it?” Gracie picked up Noelle and helped her on her feet. The ushers were nearing their pew. Trent made sure nothing had fallen to the floor before stepping out so the girls and Gracie could exit in front of him.

“I woke up last night and saw the moonlight on the horse pastures across the road,” Sadie said as she fell in line behind Emma. “It looked really pretty. And my horse is pretty, so I think moonlight is just right.”

Wow. He couldn’t remember ever hearing so many words come out of Sadie’s mouth at once. Gracie hoisted her purse strap over her shoulder and guided Noelle to where Trent stood. “Perfect name. Very meaningful.”

All five of his senses had gone on high alert the moment Gracie passed by him. Her modest blue dress and cardigan brought out the blue in her eyes. Her soft sweater brushed his arm. Her perfume was light and fresh—just like her—and her gentle tone softened his rough edges.

What if this was his actual life? What if he had a wife and three daughters? Sunday church with his own family?

He gulped and followed them out of the sanctuary. They reached the large entryway, where everyone was talking, and the girls went over to Christy Moulten, who raved about their pretty dresses. Erica and Dalton brought their kids over to join them. Then Cade and Mackenzie came by, and Brooke, Dean, Dean’s father Ed, Anne and the twins were right behind them.

All of them were in various stages of being a family.

“Guess what?” Brooke took Gracie by the arm. Trent kept his ears open.

“What?”

“Reagan went into labor early this morning!”

“Really?” Gracie’s mouth dropped open, and her eyes lit like stars.
