Zara

Angie gives a yell of pain as they put her onto the hospital bed. It’s like she wants to fold in on herself.

I get a clipboard with forms thrust into my hands. “I’m Dr. Leslie; I’m a resident here at Newfolk Hospital. I need you to fill these in,” the gruff-sounding woman says. She looks younger than me. Since when did they make doctors this young? “You need to go to the waiting room.” She points to the door.

I look over at Angie. They’re inserting an IV. I hear something about x-rays and a possible CT. I’m not sure what the last one means.

“We’ll take care of your friend,” Dr. Leslie assures me. “You fill those in, and Dr. Scott will be out to update you soon.”

I nod. “You’re in good hands,” I tell Angie, but she isn’t listening as the doctor starts to poke and prod her, asking a whole lot of questions.

“Where does it hurt?”

“What happened?”

“Who hit you?”

“Is this painful?”

“Are you having trouble breathing?”

There are a whole lot more, but I’m being ushered to the door.

“Zara!” Trident half-yells when he sees me. It looks like he was arguing with the reception staff. “How is she?” he asks as he reaches me.

“She’s doing okay. In a lot of pain, but I’m happier now that she’s here.” I hold up the forms. “I need to fill these in.”

“I can do it,” Trident says. “I’ll take responsibility for her since she’s my staff member.” He gets this almost shy look.

“Are you sure?”

“One hundred percent.” There is zero hesitation.

I didn’t think of that. I hand him the forms, and we go and take a seat. “Can I get you some coffee?” I ask him.

His eyes snap to mine. “Aren’t you on a health kick?”

What is this? I don’t get him. “And I thought you didn’t want me on a fad diet?”

“Fad diets are bad.”

“I’m not on a fad diet. I’m getting myself a water. I thought you might want a coffee.”

“Sorry. I’m being a dick,” he mumbles. “I don’t mean to be.”

“I know.” Somehow, I do know this. I just wish I knew why he was acting so strangely. It doesn’t make sense.

He smiles at me. He has dimples in both his cheeks when he really smiles and means it. Sheesh, he’s attractive. I stand there looking at him like a dork. Thinking about how good he looks in a plain white T. How I really like his heavily tattooed arms. He normally wears long-sleeved shirts to the restaurant that only allow you to catch hints of his tats. How he has really great forearms. They’re well-muscled and lightly bronzed, even though he hasn’t seen the sun much recently. He’s been at the restaurant far too often. He also has other businesses to run, so I’m sure he spends time there too.

“Are you okay?” he asks.

“Sorry, I zoned out there for a second. It’s late.” I raise my brows.

“I can take you home and handle all this.” He lifts the clipboard. “I promise to keep you informed of—”

He stops because I’m shaking my head so hard.
