Moore in Your Camera

When the first edition of this book was published the analog-digital conversion was hitting photography full-force. The first digital camera I bought, in 1999, could only capture 100,000 pixels in a single photo. While I was able to make pictures for my personal website with this camera, portrait-quality photos were still taken with a “chemical-based” analog camera, then transferred to a digital standard like .jpeg.

But Moore’s Law has taken over. Improvements in digital photography have come faster-and-faster. By 2008, when my wife and I sat for a formal portrait, we faced a small digital camera on a tripod. After dozens of pictures were taken with this camera, we were ushered into a second room, where a salesman showed us the images on a screen and took our order. He was able to show us precisely how various types of digital effects would look applied to the finished product.

Olan-Mills, the company which took those pictures, didn’t last much longer. It was bought by a company called LifeTouch in 2011, which closed the company’s facilities in Chattanooga in 2012. [198]

Kodak, the leader in chemical photography for generations, dropped its line of Kodachrome film in 2009 and survived in 2019, barely, because it went into digital photography. Polaroid, which pioneered “instant” photography in the 1960s, went bankrupt in 2001. Today grandparents can get copies of all their grandkids’ digital photos and update them via WiFi.

In 2019, the still camera business was dying entirely, photography becoming a feature inside devices like the iPhone 11. All the photography and film stores near my home in Atlanta had closed. One is now a yoga studio.
