Karen got home from work around two in the afternoon. She had hoped to be home by noon, but the admission had taken longer than she had planned. The family was anxious and had had a lot of questions about their loved one’s care. If Lisa had been there, she could have put their fears to rest in fifteen minutes. The assistant director of nursing had done her best, but she simply didn’t have Lisa’s way with people.

Assuming Lisa would be asleep in the bedroom, she let herself into the apartment as quietly as possible. Then she bit back an exclamation of irritation. Lisa was asleep all right, but she was fully dressed, sitting up on the sofa. And from the looks of her, she’d had a nice, long shower, too. With Lisa, Karen reflected, it was always about appearances. Never mind that she could have fallen and broken her pretty little neck.

She walked over to the couch and stood looking down at Lisa. “Hi.”

Lisa jumped a little as she woke up. Then her eyes focused on Karen, and she gave her a sultry smile. “Oh, hi.”

Karen sighed. It was impossible to be angry with the minx. She flopped down beside Lisa on the sofa. “I see you took a shower, even after I asked you to wait for me.”

“You didn’t ask me, you told me. And yes I did.” Lisa stuck her chin out, but gave Karen another flirtatious smile. “Why is that a problem? Did you want to join me?”

Karen felt her cheeks grow pink at the image.

Lisa stretched her arms over her head, emphasizing her perky breasts. “So, I’m starving. The only thing I could find to eat in your kitchen was bread.”

“Sorry about that,” Karen said. “I haven’t had time to go grocery shopping recently. Let me get changed, and I’ll see if I can find us something to eat. Maybe I could order in Chinese or pizza.”

“I’m getting cabin fever,” said Lisa. “I’d rather go out.”

Karen had to hand it to her. Only days after an attack that had almost put her in the hospital, Lisa was acting like there was nothing wrong at all. “There’s a restaurant downstairs,” she suggested. “We could go there.”

“Yes, please.”
