“Thanks to your little production at Hot Air, it was like tourist season in the bakery this morning.” Katie gave a pleased shoulder shimmy as she sat in the passenger seat of the Mini Cooper. “With all Pete Miller’s affairs coming to light, and the total destruction of nearly one entire room of merchandise, the frenzy of gossip pulled us from the breakfast rush all the way through the lunch rush without a gap in between.”

“My little production?” I cocked an eyebrow her way as I turned off Elkhorn Avenue onto Moraine.

She shimmied again. “Close enough.” Katie angled slightly, peering into the back seat. “Don’t let your mama try to blame you, Watson. I’m certain that’s where this is headed, claiming you spilled the beans at Hot Air.”

Though he’d been peering out the rear window, Watson turned, propped his forepaws on the middle console, and licked Katie’s face before whirling once more to stare out the window. He whimpered in longing as Moraine Avenue curved to lead us toward the smaller shopping area that housed Day of Lace.

Katie leaned down, peering through the window to get Watson’s view. “I swear he’s staring at Chipmunk Mountain, like he recognizes it and knows that’s where Leo is.”

“I guarantee you he does.” Keeping both my gaze on the road and one hand on the steering wheel, I reached behind with my free one and attempted to offer Watson a reassuring pat, but he remained out of reach. “We’ll see him in a couple of hours when we go over the financial stuff.” That promised to be an exciting meeting, after the display from Bridget earlier that morning.

Katie chuckled. “I love how you talk to Watson as if he grasps the concept of both hours and financial meetings. Although…” She peered back at him once more. “If he can distinguish one mountain from another, maybe he can delineate types of meetings as well.”

I chuckled along with her and let thoughts of Bridget fade for the moment. “Anything with Leo is going to stick in his brain. Plus, Chipmunk Mountain is the only place in Estes with trams going up the side. They’re burned into his nightmares. Watson hates those red little carts about more than anything.”

“Ah… that’s true. Still, Watson, I’m impressed.” She managed to pat his rump before turning back around. “Thanks for doing this with me, Fred. I know it’s hardly your thing.”

“Katie.” That time I took my gaze off the road long enough to look at my best friend, a little tingle of guilt present. “You don’t have to thank me for this. I love it.”

Her burst of a laugh was so powerful that if she’d been drinking, she’d have spewed hot chocolate all over the car. “Really? Winifred loves wedding-dress shopping suddenly?”

“Well, no.” I joined in her laughter and looked back to the road just in time to realize I was about to drive right past the place. Hitting the blinker with such short notice that it was pointless, I turned on a dime and entered the parking lot.
