Aurore remembered how blissfully happy she and Richard had been to wake up together every day when they first moved in. Then the children had come along, their careers had taken off, and the mornings had sped up, then changed completely.

At Ludovic’s side, lying on his bed late in the afternoon, she was finding a completely different, no less blissful but far more fleeting kind of happiness. The excitement of seeing each other without knowing when the next time would come. The unexpected feeling of emptiness that began when they parted, disappearing from each other’s lives despite only a courtyard standing between them. This afternoon they had met at his apartment. The morning after La Grande Cascade, she had slipped a note into his letterbox, telling him that she would come to his place the following Monday at about 5 o’clock in the afternoon. This was the first time she had arranged a meeting by dropping him a note, but there was no other safe way of getting in touch, not by telephone nor by email. Aurore found herself enjoying the uncertainty, the lightness and excitement of a liaison governed by chance and desire, more precious by far than habitual, everyday encounters, or trysts arranged far in advance. She felt good in the company of this man, who listened. The times they met, she told herself, would be like parentheses, interludes, a chain of scattered, exotic islands in her life, and she would move from island to island, anticipating the next while savouring the memory of the last.

‘But that guy can’t be the only distributor with access to Asia. You can find someone else.’

‘Perhaps. He’s the best placed, for sure, and anyway, I don’t have a forthcoming collection. I don’t know when we’ll do another. We haven’t got the money.’

‘You could hire my company to take it on. That would keep it out of the courts. We have bailiffs who help us out on the side. But I don’t think Kobzham is the type to be impressed by official-looking letters on headed paper. I think he just has to be shifted.’

Aurore had no idea what he meant by’shifted’. She didn’t want to think about that, not now. Calmly, she rested her chin in her hand and gazed at this person who could say ferocious things but always kept his composure; who was capable of killing crows in cold blood and making a bouquet out of their feathers, of making love like a savage while speaking softly into the hollow of her ear, talking filth in a gentle voice, as if whispering a poem. This unfathomable man. Sometimes his body frightened her. She felt Ludovic’s arm where it lay across her belly. It was heavy, and she told herself that if he put all his weight on top of her, she would suffocate. This man could inflict pain, without even realising it.

But what she saw above all was that she could tell him everything. She never talked to anyone about her
