Saxon had enjoyed talking to the people at his table. Theyâd begun with a discussion about baseball but moved quite quickly from there to whether or not their soldiers should be sent overseas in peacekeeping roles. Heâd had to scramble to keep his brain up with the speed of the conversation. Some of the people at his table were not just smart but damn good debaters as well.
At one thirty, people started leaving, and by two, he was handed the heavy broom again and set to sweeping the floor. Not that there was much mess. Some crumbs from the bread, a damp patch where some coffee had been spilled, but not a lot to clean up. These people had been hungry, and the food went in their mouths, not on the floor.
After that, the tables were washed down, the counter cleaned, and armloads of pots and plates tidied away.
He noticed both Bram and Hardy had been washing dishes and decided that sweeping floors was a better job. I donât know how they usually do it all without the three of us, though. Itâs damn hard work. And six days a week. Sheesh.
He headed back to the house to try to speak to Leah, only to find the four women piling into her car. âLeah?â he called.
She stood at the car door waiting for him to cross the parking lot.
âThanks for helping out. It means we can spend an extra half-hour at the womenâs shelter.â
âWomenâs shelter?â
Her mom stuck her head out the passenger window. âIâm sorry, no men are allowed on the property. Some of these women have been traumatized by the very men who should have protected them. Fathers, brothers, partners. But we truly appreciated your assistance today.â
Leah gave him a small wave, climbed into the car, and then pulled out of the parking lot. Bram raced over to him. âWhere have they gone? Why canât we go, too?â
âTheyâve gone to the womenâs shelter, and men are banned. We need to decide how we can see Leah again. Also, how we can get a decent amount of money for those stamps if theyâre any good.â
âWe have to help them get more sponsors for the food. I couldnât bear to think of those people going hungry when thereâs something easy we could have done,â said Hardy, joining them.
âRight now, we need to think about how weâre going to get home. We donât have a car, remember, and Iâm tired.â
Saxon felt exhaustion wash through his body as well at Bramâs words. They hadnât been to bed yet, it was mid-afternoon, and he had so many things he had to do before seeing Leah again.
âCall one of the Reed brothers to pick us up, Bram. Hardy, get your car to a collision specialist and make sure they give you a loaner while itâs being fixed. Tomorrow weâll have to be waiting outside that damn bakery at six to make sure we see Leah again. We need to talk to her about our mutual future.
