Text 7. Montgomery; or, The West Indian Adventure

The anonymous writer of this fictive study of West Indian life disclaims any association between real persons and incidents and his own characters and plot, insisting that one of his aims is to expose vice and prejudice (Montgomery 1812–13: 1.vi, ix). The narrative reveals the writer’s sympathy toward blacks and his skill at observing the intricacies of creole attitudes in all classes of Jamaicans. His interest and sympathy dispose him to closer observation than might otherwise be the case, but his discursive prose style is often highly ornamental, with only occasional creole phrases occurring in the dialogue.

The following conversation (2.91–94) takes place as Montgomery, the hero, is traveling to the Retreat, an estate where he is to take up the position of bookkeeper.
