CHAPTER NINE

Jimmy stuck with me when I went to meet Jada at our office late morning. “I’ll sit in on your meeting and then head back to the house,” he said. “I’m going to Montreal tonight.”

“Are you sure tricking this drug dealer kingpin is a good idea?” I asked. I didn’t like to think about the danger he was in.

“This is one bad dude. He needs to be put away for a good long time.”

“Evan needs a father. You won’t be any good to him dead.”

“That’s not going to happen, Sweet.” Jimmy looked sideways at me. “A guy would almost think you cared.”

I pulled open the door to our office. “As I would for any stray cat.”

Jada was sitting at her desk. She had both fans pointed at her face. It took only a second for me to realize the air conditioner had not been fixed. The office was even hotter than the day before.

“Wow,” said Jimmy. “This place is like a sauna.”

“Tell me about it,” said Jada. Her voice was drained of energy.

“We could meet in Gino’s downstairs,” I said.

“We might be overheard,” said Jada. “We can’t risk it.”

Jimmy and I took seats across the desk from her. “So what have you found out about the three ex-girlfriends?” Jimmy asked.

Jada turned one of the fans to blow on us. She rested her elbows on the desk. She had a notebook in front of her. “The girls told one of Shaw’s officers where they were last night. Shaw let me tag along when we checked out their stories. Priya Patel left work at the Bay at nine o’clock. She met a friend for drinks at ten thirty at the Heart and Crown. They were at the bar until quarter to one. The friend and a bartender support her story.”

“Then we can cross her off the list,” said Jimmy.

“We can cross Cassy Winters off, too. She finished cutting hair at nine as well. Her roommate agreed that Cassy stopped for groceries and was home just after eleven. She didn’t go out again.” Jada looked up from her notes. “We’re working from the fact Brent was on the radio until eleven and took half an hour to get home.”

“That leaves Mandy Ling,” I said. “Was she working at the bar last night?”

Jada shook her head. “Mandy has Tuesday nights off. She said that she went out for dinner with a friend. They left the restaurant at nine thirty. She claimed that she drove home and watched a movie on Netflix. The friend supports the dinner part. Mandy lives alone so nobody can back up the rest of her story. She can’t confirm where she was between eleven thirty and one a.m.”

We all looked at each other. “She has to be the one,” said Jimmy.

“Shaw thinks so, too. That’s why Mandy is now at the police station answering questions,” said Jada. “I expect she’ll be arrested for murder before the day is over.” Jada beamed a smile at us.

“That has to be the fastest arrest in police history,” said Jimmy.
