CHAPTER 17

“If she pulls out a five thousand dollar barette, I’m leaving,” Leigh whispered to Betsey.

A quick knock at the door caused Song to jump up and clap her hands excitedly.

“Maybe it’s Joaquin, eh?” Leigh elbowed Runa.

“Shush,” Runa hissed, but with a hopeful glance toward the door.

Song opened the door and practically yanked the arm of the person there as she dragged her inside. “Quick, before anyone gets a picture.”

Gloria stumbled through the door with a black garment bag folded over her arm. She nodded hello to everyone, though Runa didn’t look up from her phone long enough to say hello.

“It just got here from Milan,” Gloria said, holding up the garment bag toward Song. “You’re welcome.”

The bride-to-be emitted a short squeal. “Okay, thank you! Come help me try it on.” Song practically skipped to the bedroom with Gloria following behind.

“I bet the wedding dress is going to be impeccable,” Betsey said. “Song has great taste. Honestly, I thought she might be a total poser, but I’ve been really impressed with her ideas and style.”

“It’s a Madame Amore original,” Leigh said.

Betsey let out a long, low whistle. “I guess being a gigantic celebrity and marrying a humongous movie star has its perks.”

Wedding dresses weren’t in Leigh’s sphere of interest, but she knew who the designer was. Madame Amore had designed wedding dresses for actresses, singers, and even a princess of Finland. “Did she make the bridesmaid dresses, too?”

Runa shook her head. “No, but she made the maid of honor dress. And because Daisy was so much taller and thinner than I am, it’s going to take a lot of modifications to get it where I can actually wear it. I tried to put it on, and it was a total tragedy.”

Total silence from the couch caused Runa to look up then let out an uncomfortable laugh. “Oh wow, I just said that out loud, didn’t I? I’m sorry. You must think I’m heartless.”

“Just a little… insensitive maybe,” Leigh said. “But I tend to blurt out anything that comes into my mind too, so I can’t judge you.”

The kitten climbed out of Leigh’s lap and started exploring the couch with its tiny paws. Runa reached out a hand toward it, but it turned and climbed into Betsey’s lap instead.

“It’s just that this wedding is important, you know?” Runa looked from Betsey to Leigh, trying to explain herself. “I’m not on the same level as Song, and being chosen as a bridesmaid has given me a huge boost. And now, being the maid of honor is really going to take me to the next level. It’s too bad what happened to Daisy, but you’re both businesswomen. Surely you can see how I have to take advantage of this opportunity? Just like you, Betsey, stepping into the bridesmaid role.”

Leigh and Betsey shared a quick look. It was an interesting point, and it shed a little light on how these influencers viewed their lives and careers. For Leigh and Paloma, the worlds of life and career were somewhat separate.
