I get to the refuge that is my car, finally exhaling the breath I had trapped. I turn the key and the engine chokes. I turn it again. Choke, choke. Not now baby. “Come on, come on, come on,” I beg.

Chhhhh-oke.

Crap!

Shutting my eyes, I bang the heels of my palms against the steering wheel in despair. My car did not just bite the dust. Not now.

I glance back to see if Nakia’s still here, at the same time the throaty purr of Jeremy’s motorcycle grows louder. Until he’s right outside my passenger-side window. Wearing his leather jacket and matching black gloves. His shades pulled over his eyes, he leans forward slightly on the bike, holding his chin in one hand as he proffers a smirk.

One. Little. Smirk, and BAM. My already-sodden panties become fresh pools of need. Swallowing my attraction, I give a curt nod and pull out my cell. I’ll just call for a tow, and a rideshare. Except that I have zero bars. Zero.

I didn’t even know that was possible?

Jeremy straightens, pushing down the kickstand with his foot. He swings that same leg in a smooth arc, dismounting his bike with the grace of a dancer and the gait of a lion. Such a gruff comportment, that man has. So big and strong and impossibly cool.

Nakia is still here, by the way. Getting her equipment loaded up in her car. I can still ask her for a ride back. I open my door.

“Pop the hood,” Jeremy barks, looking at me through the windshield. I root around for the lever, accidentally opening the trunk first. Which wins me a teasing smile from him. “Now turn the key in the ignition.”

I do as he said and it makes the same whirring, strangled sound that makes my face cringe. Jeremy narrows his eyes in concentration. With that face he could be any guy in a college classroom taking a test. The way he so studiously examines the problem in front of him. I take out the key when he tells me to.

“It’s freewheeling,” Jeremy says. “You need a new starter. I can do it, just need the parts. I’ll see if my buddy Kohl has anything on hand.”

“Okay, that would be great. Do you have enough cell service to call him?”

“Not out here, baby. We’ll take a ride to my place. Fifteen, twenty minutes. There’s signal there.”

I gulp a swallow. It’s not too late to ask Nakia. It’s almost too late. I look up at Jeremy. “We?”

“Hop on,” he says. It’s that darn grin—he puts it on and it puts a spell on me. I walk over to him, my wet clothes clinging to me. Jeremy sheds his jacket and opens it. I turn, shoving my arms into the sleeves. “Atta girl.”

I face him. “A little help?”

“Mmm.” With his hands on my waist, he lifts me into the bike as easily as before, demonstrating his Herculean strength. This time my legs are spread against his back instead of his front.
