This is a stern quarter view of Francesco Nullo in the late 1930s, a member of the four-ship Sauro class. One minor difference between the two classes was the second fire control director positioned aft between the torpedo mounts, as seen in this view. This was to allow the aft 4.7in mount to engage targets independently. It did not prove successful and was removed to save weight. (M. Brescia Collection)

Armament

These ships were more heavily armed than the preceding Sella class. The main battery consisted of two twin 4.7in mounts located in the same locations. The torpedo battery was increased to two triple 21in mounts. Light armament remained the same with two 40mm single guns and two 13.2mm machine guns. The ships could carry up to 52 mines. Since the ships were exiled to Eritrea and were sunk early in the war, they received no modifications.
