PRIMARY CHANNELS

The Liver channel

Both the Liver primary channel pathway and the Liver Luo-connecting vessel as well as the sinew channel of the Liver are related to the male genital region and thus exert an important influence on the reproductive tract. In the Ling Shu, chapter 10, it says: ‘The Liver-channel joins the tendons and the tendons assemble at the genitals.’4

COURSE OF THE PRIMARY CHANNEL OF THE LIVER

It arises on the lateral side of the big toenail at the point Liv 1, runs over the foot to Liv 4 (1 cun in front of the medial malleolus), then runs upwards along the medial lower leg where the Liver channel crosses the Spleen pathway at point Sp 6.

The Liver channel runs in front of the Spleen channel up to an area 8 cun above the medial malleolus, then crosses it and runs behind the Spleen channel up to the knee and to the medial part of the thigh. There the primary Liver channel runs to the groin and flows around the genitals. The outer course finally passes the abdomen and ends in the 6th ICR on the nipple line with the acupuncture point Liv 14.

So far, all of this is well known. Let us continue with the inner courses of the Liver channel.

The inner part of the Liver primary channel runs via acupoints Sp 12 and Sp 13 to the pubic area where it circles the genitals. Then it rises to enter the lower abdomen. There it crosses the Conception vessel (Ren Mai) at Ren 2, Ren 3 and Ren 4 and goes around the Stomach before entering the Liver as an organ and connecting with the Gallbladder. It crosses the diaphragm and spreads out in the rib region and in the hypochondrium, runs along the neck to the nasopharynx to connect with the tissues that surround the eye. And finally, it runs to the vertex over the forehead and meets at Du 20 with the Governor vessel.

The Liver primary channel connects to the following Zang-fu organs: Liver, Gallbladder, Lungs, Stomach.

The Liver primary channel meets other primary channels:

• with the Spleen channel at points Sp 6, Sp 12 and Sp 13

• with the Conception vessel at points Ren 2, Ren 3 and Ren 4

• with the Pericardial channel at Pc 1

• with the Governor vessel at Du 20.
