On 2 miles (3km) from San José Succotz, Benque Viejo del Carmen * [map] is the last town before the border. Benque is a quiet place except during fiesta days, in mid-July, and Easter, when its streets throng with crowds. The Durán family, Spanish expatriates, have established Cubola (Belize’s main book publishers) and Stonetree Records (Belize’s main music producers), tucked away in this corner of the country. There is also a small art gallery and monthly lectures and classes.

Belmopan

The tiny, modern capital of Belize is reached from the junction on the Western Highway opposite Guanacaste National Park. Belmopan ( [map] was born when the government and part of the diplomatic community relocated from Belize City following Hurricane Hattie. Belmopan has few facilities for tourists and the town is dominated by government offices, arranged in the style of a Maya plaza.
