FIGURE 5.5: Proportions of citizens citing a haptic memory of the polling station or election atmosphere as one of their top memories of past elections

Haptic memories, however, often remain among the most vivid. Many citizens cite a haptic memory of the polling station, its atmosphere, or their personal experience of the moment of voting as among their most salient electoral memories, as shown in figure 5.5. Across countries, between 11.9% (Georgia) and 26.3% (South Africa) of citizens cite a haptic memory as one of the most vivid that they recall from past elections.

In figure 5.6, we focus similarly on interactive memories (discussions or arguments with family or friends). Memories of discussions represent the top memory of 6.6% of British citizens and 20.3% of South Africans. By contrast, arguments are cited as the leading memory by from 4.2% of citizens in the UK to 14.6% in South Africa. Overall, citizens reporting an interactive memory of the election as their most salient one thus vary from 10.8% in the UK to 34.9% in South Africa.
