Climbing into bed had been a real chore for Laylah since her muscles were so relaxed. As she waited for Chancellor to come out of the bathroom, she picked up the phone and dialed into the message center. Even with all her numbers registered on the no-call list, she still received annoying telemarketing calls, but rarely did they leave messages. The first call was from a popular department store announcing their upcoming weekend sale. She erased it when prompted to do so.

Her mother’s voice always made Laylah smile. When she heard her reason for phoning, her smile quickly turned into a frown. The family was all coming down from San Francisco this weekend. Since Brandon would still be in town, her parents and both aunts thought it would be nice to have a small family reunion dinner at her place.

Laylah thought it would have been nice to have been consulted before her family had finalized their plans, but she wasn’t surprised it hadn’t occurred. When they got into their heads what they thought was a brilliant idea, they just began the execution.

Kelly would also be in town, so Laylah thought it might be a bit overcrowded if everyone decided to stay with her, which was more than likely the plan. She’d give up her bedroom to her parents, and her aunts could stay in the guest rooms. That meant she and Kelly would sleep together on the queen sofa bed in her office.

As much as Laylah was annoyed by this little surprise family visit, she knew they’d have a great time. Upon hearing the toilet flush, she wondered if Chancellor was up to meeting so many members of her clan all at one time, as well as her best friend. This visit could get real interesting, she thought, hoping everything would go smoothly. Her family wasn’t one to hold its tongue, the same as she was. She’d learned from them to speak her mind or plan on spending her entire life taking crap from others.

When Chancellor came out of the bathroom, she was surprised to see him fully dressed in the same clothes he’d been wearing the last couple of days. It bothered her to know he was leaving. “Going somewhere?” It was too late for him to get a room at any shelter, she knew, praying that he wouldn’t go out there and walk the streets. Perhaps Joshua’s home was an option. She sure hoped so.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.” He came over and sat down on the side of the bed, brushing her hair back from her face with his fingers. “Would it be okay if I called you at work tomorrow? It’s hard on me when I don’t get to talk to you through the day.”

Laylah sat up in bed. “Of course it’s okay, but why are you leaving now? We’ve had such a sensational evening. I want you to stay here with me.”

He shook his head. “Not tonight, babe. I don’t want to wear out my welcome.
