A Bone Char Filter for Removing Fluoride and Arsenic

A bone char filter was designed to work in tandem with a Brita filter in order to remove not only fluoride and arsenic with bone char but also aluminum and lead with the Brita filter. In order for ions to be removed almost completely both Brita and bone char filters require a slow flow rate and long empty bed contact time (EBCT). The Brita filter has a flow rate of 400cc/minute. Since the Brita filter and bone char filter must work in tandem, they both must have flow rate of 400cc/minute. Therefore, the bone char filter was designed to have a flow rate of 400cc/minute and an EBCT of 0.7 minutes. These constraints require the bone char filter to have an internal volume of approximately 300cc with the following actual specifications595 :
