When Aram and Thomas reached the marina office, the door was open, but no one was inside. Thomas looked around; an elderly man with a gray beard was sitting on a boat moored nearby.

“Excuse me, have you seen anyone in the office?”

“Kia was there just now,” the man replied. “She won’t be far away.”

It was almost one o’clock; they didn’t have time to hang around.

At that moment they saw a girl approaching along the jetty. She was wearing turned-up shorts and a dark-blue T-shirt with the marina logo on the right-hand side. A name badge revealed that she was indeed Kia. She appeared to be about the same age as the sailing instructors, nineteen or twenty.

Thomas went to meet her and held up his police ID. “Could you help us out with some information about a motorboat that we think has been moored here over the past few days?”

“Sure.” She hesitated. “Has something happened?”

There was no point in keeping quiet about Benjamin’s disappearance—the news would soon be out in any case.

“One of the boys from the sailing camp has gone missing,” Aram explained. “His name is Benjamin Dufva.”

“Oh no! Some of the girls were asking about him this morning, but I didn’t realize the police were involved.”

“We’re hoping it’s nothing serious, but if you do see him, please contact us.”

Thomas showed Kia Benjamin’s passport photograph. It was old; Benjamin couldn’t have been more than eight or nine. A shy child staring into the camera. If he didn’t turn up soon, they would have to get ahold of a better picture.

“He’s eleven now,” Aram went on, “but not very tall.”

The two detectives followed Kia into the office, where a narrow desk sat alongside an ice-cream cabinet. A selection of notices was displayed on the walls: the taxi boat ran between eight in the morning and nine in the evening; the depth of the channel leading into Kroksöfladen was six feet; use of the sauna was free.

“We don’t see much of the kids from the camp,” she said. “They tend to stick to their own area.”

Through the window Thomas could see the ramp with the small boats drawn up out of the water on the other side of the inlet. How deep was it? No more than three feet at its shallowest, but significantly deeper farther out.

Small children could drown in eighteen inches of water; an eleven-year-old who’d banged his head wouldn’t need much more.

A motorboat with two instructors on board was just setting off, and Thomas hoped David had gotten the search underway.

Kia sat down at the computer.

“We’re looking for the owner of a small motorboat,” Thomas said. “Unfortunately we don’t know the make, but it’s white with a blue cabin. We think there was only one person on board, a man in his late thirties or early forties. Does that ring any bells?”

It was still low season, so it was unlikely there had been many temporary moorings. The other two sailors currently in the marina hadn’t noticed either Benjamin or the man.
