Twenty-one

“Business or pleasure, Detectives?” Axel Kincaid asked when he met us at the front door to Spark. He glanced down at the badges clipped to our belts. “Never mind. Asked and answered.”

“Can we come in?”

Kincaid glanced over his shoulder. “Meet me at the side door in five minutes.” The door shut in our faces.

Brad snorted. “Does that seem ominous or overly cryptic to you?”

“Nah, not at all,” I said sarcastically.

“Good, so it’s just me.” We made our way around the side of the building. Brad insisted on remaining some place he could keep tabs on those exiting from the front. That was a good call, considering how Kincaid liked to sneak around. But no one of any particular interest came or went while we waited. “Do you remember the last time we were in this alley?”

“Bad memories,” I said.

“Mostly.”

I glanced at my partner. “Mostly?”

He grinned. “It could have been worse.”

The door creaked open. Axel waited on the other side. “All right. Everyone’s gone home. You can come in.” He didn’t wait to see if we would follow before heading down the hallway, past the locker room, and back to the bar. The cleaning crew and staff were tidying up while Axel mixed himself a Manhattan. “What would you like?” He focused on me. “You look like you could use an espresso martini.”

“We’re working,” I said.

“An espresso then?” Axel didn’t wait for me to answer before starting up the machine. “What would you like, Detective Fennel?” He lifted a bottle of spiced rum. “High ball? Low ball?”

“Like Liv said, we’re working.” Brad gazed longingly at the bottle of tequila. “Did you stop by the precinct earlier tonight?”

“I’ve been here and haven’t left.” Kincaid slid the tiny mug of espresso toward me and set to work making another one. “Why? Did something happen?”

“Stop playing games.”

“Brad, easy.” I nudged him gently with my arm. “I got this.”

Axel finished with the espresso machine and put a cup down beside my partner. “Got what?”

“A few hours ago, someone dropped off two tabs of Red Rabbit. I’m sure you don’t know anything about that.” I kept my voice down so it wouldn’t carry.

“How would I? I’ve been at the club all night. Hundreds of people can vouch for me.”

“We spoke about this earlier in the afternoon.”

“I told you I couldn’t help. Nothing’s changed.” Axel picked up his cocktail and took a long sip while staring at my partner. “This sure is tasty. How about just a nip? I won’t tell.”

“We need to know how you got your hands on the drugs,” Brad hissed. “Lives are at stake. We have to shut this thing down. People are dying. Don’t you understand that?”

“I understand plenty. This is my club. Do you know what happens after a drug bust? Everything gets confiscated. Money, property, cars, whatever was paid for with drug money gets taken. I would never risk anything like that happening here. My assets are mine. This club is mine. I control what goes on inside. I don’t let dealers in here, so no, Detective Fennel, I don’t know who’s dealing that shit.
