Amanda awoke as Wes brushed his lips over hers. She was in her

bed, but she couldn’t remember when they’d changed rooms. The

bedroom was still dark, except for a pool of light spilling onto the carpet from her bathroom. He was leaning over her. “What time is

it?”

“Around four,” he said, moving away from the bed. “I just

wanted to say goodbye.”

“Four?” She rolled over and turned on the bedside lamp. He was

dressed in a western-cut, black suit, white shirt and string tie. He looked more like an oil baron than a cop.

“I have to testify at the Delancy trial, remember? My plane

leaves for Dallas in two hours.”

“Thanks for telling me goodbye,” she said, pleased that he

hadn’t slipped out of her house like a one-night stand. “You must

be exhausted.”

“I’ll catch up tonight at the hotel.” He picked up his fancy Stet-

son, placed it on his head, then ran his fingertips along the brim.

“How do I look, boss?”

“If the jurors are women, they’ll be eating out of your hand.”

“I’ll be back in time to pick you up for Thursday’s shift at the

Prickly Cactus. See you in my dreams,” he said as he walked to-

ward the bedroom door.

“I had a dream about you last night. I dreamed you told me you

loved me.”

He stopped mid-stride, then turned and faced her. His expres-

sion was thoughtful. “And if it wasn’t a dream?”

“It changes everything.”

He arched a brow. “You want me to say it was a dream?”

She shook her head. “This is serious.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Then you better get going. If you miss that plane, your boss

will have your cute ass in a sling.”

Wes grinned and left the room. He called back to her. “Did I tell

you today how much I love red hair?”

A moment later she heard the front door close.
