Tips for Incorporating Risk Assessment into Practice

We appreciate that risk assessment is complex and may seem overwhelming to many clinicians. Take the process one step at a time. At minimum, consider the following, which we consider to be the most important “red flags” for increased risk:

Many affected relatives. Especially look for:

° Multiple affected individuals over several generations, especially when the affected relatives are closely related to each other and to the at-risk individual

° Several affected siblings in one family, when the at-risk individual is one of the siblings or a child of one of the siblings

° Close relatives on both sides of the family who are affected, especially when one or both parents of the at-risk individual is affected.
