±Applying to Residency: Steps for the US Medical Student or Graduate

1) Receive your ERAS token from your dean’s office. 2) As soon as you receive your token ID number, register with MyERAS (https://services.aamc.org/eras/myeras20XX/). A token can be used only once. Make note of and remember your AAMC ID when you register.

3) You must do the following to complete your ERAS application: A. Complete the MyERAS application, which includes sections for biographical information, education, medical education, training (if applicable), experience descriptions, publications, licensure and medical licenses (if applicable), self-identification, language fluency and miscellaneous. Once you submit your application, you cannot change it!

B. Documents: This is where you will indicate who will write your letters of reference, write your personal statement(s), and authorize release of USMLE/COMLEX transcripts: This section has the following components:

a. USMLE transcript release

b. COMLEX transcript release (if applicable) c. Personal statement(s) entry: Enter a title for each personal statement (for example: community, academic, etc.) This title is not visible to programs.

d. Letters of reference designations Enter each LOR author name and title. The specialty to which you assign a letter is available only to you, your LOR author and your designated dean’s office. You will need to print a letter request form that you will give to each LOR author. This will allow each letter writer to upload his or her letter of reference. Each LOR request form

is specific and personalized for each LOR author. It can be used only once. Letter writers can use ERAS LOR Portal to upload letters.

e. Picture (max of 3” x 4”) (transmitted by your dean’s office)

f. Medical School Transcript: Sent by your dean’s office to ERAS.

g. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (sent on 10/1 to programs from your dean’s office) C. Programs: Using this part of the application, you can search for programs, select programs and program types to which you will apply, and assign supporting documents that will be sent to each program (letters of reference, personal statement, photograph and USMLE/ COMLEX transcripts).

4) After you submit your ERAS application, keep track of what documents have been received by ERAS and downloaded by programs via the Applicant Document Tracking System (ADTS). Through ADTS you can monitor the status of your LORs and documents and whether or not they have been received by ERAS. You can also view what documents programs have retrieved and downloaded.

5) You must ALSO register with the NRMP R3 system (use the same AAMC ID number) - you will rank your programs with the NRMP R3 system, or for any other matching program - AOA, Military, San Francisco, and Urology.
