Chapter Six

Coming upon a large, turn of the century, farm house, with rustic shutters, three large barns, sheep baying in the background, and a faded red tractor, I knew I had found my purpose. There was not one single vehicle in the drive, and that only meant one of two things. One, the person dying inside, most likely a man by the smell of his blood, either had no family, or two, the family was not home, which was odd for being the middle of the night.

I looked up to reassure myself that the moon was still high in the sky.

I knew I had a limited time to work, so I went to the back of the house and examine the area to see how I could enter. Luckily, there was a half-dilapidated trellis that traveled from three feet off the ground up beside and old balcony that looked just as shaky.

With no further examination, I jumped from the ground to the trellis easily. The trellis was covered in vines and barbs from a rosebush long faded of its flowers.

I swung easily from the trellis to the balcony that did not look fit for standing, let alone attempting my gymnast act on. It looked as though I could have been one flip away from falling to the ground. I wouldn’t have died for sure, but it would have made way too much noise for such a late hour.

I knew for a fact from the second I had rounded the house that the balcony would lead to my purpose, and it did. Creeping carefully through the door leading off the deck of death, the one that had been left open to let in the fresh breeze, I caught the first glance of him. I knew it was a man, and judging by the looks of him, he had been very sick and in a lot of pain for a long while.

His face was glistening in the light of the moon with sweat from a fever long too high for any human to tolerate. His skin was scorching to the touch, yet he seemed to be convulsing with chills. I could also tell by the smell of his blood that he was losing all liver function and had been for.

The man looked to be in his late forties, early fifties, however he could have been much younger. Sickness tended to age a person, sometimes adding years to their appearance.

Upon observation, I saw a metal tray hovering over his midsection. The tray was much like the ones used in hospitals. Like the ones that rolled under the bed and went over the patient to allow the person laying down to eat while they rested. As I glanced around the room, I could tell there was plenty of hospital equipment. The man’s family wanted him to die at home, and I couldn’t blame them.

I figured Home Health Care, or some other agency provided it for the man. Humans are about their comforts, and I
