NINETEEN
âI didnât like how she said that,â AnnaLise muttered to the empty foyer.
âHey, the great man died under â at best â mysterious circumstances and youâre the heir apparent.â
AnnaLise turned to see Patrick Hoag, who had apparently come from the media room. âYouâre saying Iâm a suspect in Dickens death?â
Dickens Hartâs lawyer grinned. âYouâre certainly the one most likely to benefit. Police One-oh-One: The âheir apparentâ becomes, by definition, the âsuspect apparentâ as well.â
âI thought the spouse â or ex-spouse â always drew the most attention.â AnnaLise waved her hand toward the party on the other side of the door. âAnd, God knows, weâve got enough of those.â
âEnough of what?â Rose Boccaccio had motored up noiselessly behind them.
âExes,â AnnaLise explained.
âHexes?â Rose was fiddling with a wire behind her ear. âHow exciting. Iâve heard thereâs still an active Wiccan community up here. In fact, I used to belong to a coven back in the day.â
AnnaLise and Patrick exchanged looks, before he cracked a grin and ducked back into the media room.
AnnaLise said, âI didnât know that, Rose, but I said âexes,â as in ex-wives and ex-lovers. Not âhexes,â as in spells.â
âAhh, that makes much more sense. Iâm afraid I lost a bit of my hearing during my rock ân roll phase.â Rose reversed the chair as she spoke then pushed the lever full forward, making the thing almost leap toward the kitchen. âFucking woofers.â
AnnaLise laughed and trailed after her, grateful for the distraction. âAnything I can get for you, Rose?â
âNo. No, but thank you, dear. I was just going up to my room.â
âAre you taking the elevatâ?â AnnaLise paused, silently cursing at herself. âIâm so sorry. That was a stupid question.â
âNot so stupid,â Rose said. âI have been known to hoist myself out of this mini-tank for special occasions.â Then a sigh. âAlthough I doubt Iâd have the stamina anymore to climb Mt. Everest there.â She inclined her head toward the staircase.
âWas it a stroke?â AnnaLise asked as she accompanied the woman into the kitchen.
âThat put me in this chair?â Rose maneuvered herself close enough to the counter next to the stove to reach a pan of Rice Krispy Treats. âStroke of luck, maybe. I fell from a third-story window and lived to tell the tale, though my spineâs a little worse for wear.â
AnnaLise levered out a hunk of the Krispy Treat, putting it on a napkin and extending the sticky bar to Rose. âIâm so sorry.â
âDonât be,â the older woman waved off the younger one with her non-engaged hand. âIt sure wasnât your fault.â
âIf I may ask, how did you fall?â
ââFallâ is the way I candy-coat it for public consumption, but since weâre nearly back-door family, I can level with you.â A wicked grin. âI jumped.â
âYou tried to commit suicide?â
âIneptly, as it turns out. At the time I couldnât seem to do anything right. I was pregnant and jobless â though in those days just being knocked-up was enough to make you unemployable. When my druggie boyfriend dropped out of the scene, too, I swallowed what few pretty pills heâd left behind and took a swan dive.
