Chapter 19

Stefano

‘You really were obnoxious.’

Stefano nodded and smiled at the dignitaries who bowed as they departed. He ignored the hiss from Kiri beside him and kept her hand firmly in his. To hell with what the gossips said.

It had been a most unusual day. He supposed he should try to curb his desire to run through any man who spoke to Kiri, let alone those who actually kissed her hand, but he wasn’t sure it was worth the effort.

He was beginning to understand the pirate tendencies of his ancestors when they’d captured women and dragged them off. His mother would have been horrified. Then he smiled and remembered something she had once said to him about his father’s courtship.

Perhaps his mama would not have been so horrified after all.

When they reached the helicopter he waved the pilot into the front with his man and climbed into the back with Kiri.

‘Not flying the craft this time?’ When he didn’t answer she said, ‘I think I’ll sit in the front.’ Vixen.

He laughed out loud, ‘I think not.’ And helped her fasten her seat belt.

When he looked again at her face she was shaking her head. The struggle on her face suddenly gave way and she smiled too. They grinned at each other, and his relief was a warning about how much this woman’s good opinion mattered to him.

That and having his arms around her.

He’d been fantasising about that all day. Not his usual modus operandi. In a dream world it would be better if he kept Kiri in his bed — that way she would not mess with his head, just his skin. Even at this brief thought his body stirred.

In the real world, she’d just as likely say he should stay in bed and she would run the hospital.

But his prestige would suffer if others heard the way she spoke to him. He really needed to do something about that, but he wasn’t sure what. He had a feeling that a direct order would give her the excuse to walk away.

She straightened her face and pretended to frown at him. ‘I don’t know why I was smiling. I am not happy with you. At all.’

He inclined his head and threw caution to the wind rushing by outside the helicopter. ‘And there are things I need to discuss about your behaviour. Perhaps we could examine this over dinner. Privately. Say seven? My suite.’

‘Six-thirty, if you don’t mind. I work tomorrow. And the restaurant will be fine.’
