I parked in my driveway and stared at Chelsea’s house. Had I read everything wrong? Or were the guys right, and I fucked up?

Given my track record vs. theirs, I had a feeling they were right.

I walked across the grass to her front door. I pressed the button for her doorbell, noticing it for the first time. Did she install it because of me? Because of the notes? Or was it always there?

The door whooshed open while I was asking myself those questions, and there she was. Her hair piled high on her head in a messy bun, brown waves curling down her collarbones and teasing her breasts. Breasts contained in a tank top and covered with a sweater that did nothing to stop my memory of the way they looked naked. My gaze continued lower to her waist and legs, curves and more curves wrapped up in cotton that looked almost as soft as she was.

“Did you need something?” she asked, pulling me out of my fantasy of stripping her naked and having her right then and there. I wasn’t there to fuck her. I was there to prove to her I wanted more than that.

But fuck, it was hard to remember that when she was standing in front of me, looking like a walking temptation.

“Can I come in?” I asked.

She peeked out the door, seeing my car in my driveway, and took a step back.

Dozer lived up to his name, snoozing in a large dog bed next to the couch. Her TV was on, a show I didn’t recognize playing on the screen. I looked around her living room, seeing the place for the first time, even though I’d been there twice.

“I like your home,” I told her. The couch was a dark blue color with pink, green, and purple pillows. A gray blanket was draped over the cushions like she’d been curled up under it until I disturbed her night. The coffee table in front was solid wood and matched the cabinets in her kitchen. Lamps on the end tables gave the room a soft glow that added to the intimate feel of the space. Cozy. Soft. A place you could relax and forget about everything.

“Thanks,” she said, her tone offering me zero guidance in how she felt.

“Listen, I think I messed things up with us.”

“With us?”

“Yeah. Last week. I told you I wanted to keep it quiet, but I was told that might have sounded like I was trying to hide our relationship.”

“I’m not sure how else that could be interpreted.” She crossed her arms over her chest, then released them and pulled her sweater tighter, covering her chest before crossing her arms again.

I took a step toward her. “Jude’s mom left when he was too young to remember her. For a few years, she would come back and visit, but he doesn’t know her as his mom. I mean, he knows she’s his mom, but he doesn’t have a relationship with her. She’s a stranger who shows up sometimes.
