I snapped a few photos of the finished shelves and covered them back up before work the next morning. Brantley was going to come by at the end of the day and help me deliver them to Stone Auto Repair, but first I had to open the store and get through a long day.

It was Wednesday, which meant Dick, Wayne, and Tony would be there in the afternoon. They didn’t know anything about the shelves, and I was going to need to close early in order to deliver them before Derek closed for the day, so I was likely going to have to kick the men out. It was not going to be fun.

I was halfway through my day before I was able to take a break and grab a drink of water and something to eat. I knew to be quick, but I also knew if anyone came in, it would be fine.

The store was still quiet when I walked back in a few minutes later, which was good, but I could tell someone was there. “Can I help you?” I asked when I found the man on aisle three. I didn’t know his name, but he was in there a lot. I was fairly certain he worked with Teddy on David’s crew, but I wasn’t positive.

“Last time I was in here, I swore I spotted a dovetail jig. Do you have one?”

My neck burned as I shook my head. I’d taken the one he was talking about. I paid for it, at cost, but it’d been sitting on the shelf for a year and no one had ever said anything about it. I wanted to try it out for some of the pullout drawers on Derek’s project, and on a project I was doing for myself. “I did, but it’s, uh, not here anymore.”

“Dammit,” he said. “I’ve been saving up for that, keeping my eye on it. It was a really good one, and I didn’t want to have to pay for shipping if I ordered it online.”

“I get it. I can get another one in here in a few days.”

The guy groaned and shook his head slowly. “I guess I don’t really have a choice. The big stores would take just as long.”

“Sorry about that, man. I’m Knox, by the way. I know I’ve seen you in here a bunch.”

“Yeah. Andre.”

“Nice to meet you. Let’s go check out what you’re looking for and see how quickly we can get it in.”

Andre nodded and followed me up front to the register. I pulled up the system I used to submit orders and searched for the jig I had in the back in my workshop.

“Shit,” I mumbled. I looked up at Andre. “It’s on backorder.”

Andre exhaled on a huff and stared up at the ceiling. “Of course it is. I’m finally ready to get it, and it’s impossible.”

“Can’t get what?” Dick asked, choosing that moment to walk into the store. Tony was on his heels.

Andre looked at the men, frustrating clear in his gaze.
