Introducing my famous dad to my small town friends was definitely cause for panic. What was I thinking? There was a reason I moved to MacKellar Cove. I knew no one would care who my dad was. But that didnât mean I wanted them to know.
But it was too late to go back on that. I had to trust that my friends wouldnât care. They would understand Iâm the same person Iâve always been. But I had no idea who else would be at OâKelleyâs on a Friday night, and it could be bad.
âAre you ready to go?â my dad called through my bedroom door. Heâd been a different person in the week since our talk. Happier. More talkative. And kind of more of a pain in my ass.
He was getting ready to be Jensen Carmack instead of my dad.
âIâll be right out!â I called in response. There was nothing else I needed to do, but I was anxious. I didnât love Jensen Carmack, rockstar. I loved my dad, but the rockstar version of him was kind of a dick.
And Iâd invited that guy in.
âItâs going to be fine,â I told my reflection. I hoped I was right. I walked out of my room, ready for the night.
âIs that what youâre wearing?â my dad asked, sneering as he took in my outfit.
I looked down at the clothes Iâd chosen. Jean shorts that were worn and comfortable and almost as soft as pajamas. A pink tee that was almost too small but I hadnât been able to bring myself to give it up yet. It was a big shirt, so no one else could tell it was small. I added a pair of small hoop earrings and a touch of lipgloss and tied my hair up into a knot, the only style that captured the short layers that framed my face.
âWhatâs wrong with it?â I asked, wondering if Iâd popped a button or torn a seam or something. I couldnât see or feel anything out of place.
My dad was dressed like a rocker. He wore black jeans and his favorite stage shoes. Ones he always said were comfortable enough to spend hours on his feet but stylish enough that he wouldnât risk being called out by the media for his appearance. He added a black button down with silver buttons and bright blue stitching. He left it untucked and rolled the sleeves up to show off the tattoos on his forearms. His hair was styled back, the not-daring-to-recede hairline he was so proud of on full display.
He could have been going to play a show. I could have been going to work.
But I knew heâd be the best dressed person in OâKelleyâs. By far. Even Trent, who was likely the only person I knew who had more money than my father, would be in jeans and a tee and casual for a night out.
Not Jensen Carmack.
He assessed me with a gaze that said he was looking for a way to tell me to change without telling me to change.
