I packed up my bag on Tuesday afternoon and nervously zipped it closed. I was as ready as I was going to be, but I was still anxious. I had never taught a group of people before, let alone a group of kids.
I had no idea how many would show up, so I packed up twenty kits. I followed Melodyâs advice and made some of them a little smaller for the younger kids, and more bigger for older kids. I figured a bracelet was easy enough, and since it wasnât that big, it could be finished in under twenty minutes for most of the kids.
I parked in the lot and made my way to the door. I waited for someone to buzz me in, smiling at Amelia when she opened the door.
âThe kids should be here soon. You need to get set up before they invade you. I have you up on the stage. When youâre done, you need to sweep the area very well because a dance class uses that stage later tonight. We canât have a bead roll under someoneâs foot and they get hurt,â Amelia told me as she walked.
I hurried to follow her across the wide open space of the gym. Basketball hoops were at both ends with extras on each side. Faded lines on the well worn floor made it look like other games could be played on the same surface, but the rack of basketballs made it obvious the kids didnât choose another option.
Amelia climbed the five steps to the stage and stopped in front of the first table with her hand on her lower back.
âAre you okay?â I asked her.
She huffed a laugh. âNo, but Iâll live. Is there anything else you need? You can move the tables around if youâd like. I wasnât sure how you wanted them.â
âI might. Iâll think about it for a minute.â
Amelia looked at her watch and grimaced. âYou donât have much more than a minute. The elementary school lets out right now. Kids will be here soon. I asked them to sign up, but not many did. More will likely filter in if you have space for them. Weâll see how it goes for today.â
I nodded, feeling more than a little deflated. If not many kids signed up, was I wrong about them wanting to do this? I could be home working on new pieces instead of teaching kids.
I shook my head and chastised myself. Even if I only had one kid show up who was interested in learning, it was one I wouldnât reach another way. I was going to try, and maybe more kids would come next week.
I decided to leave the tables how they were and focus on getting the kits out so the kids could sit down and start to explore. I wanted to find small work stations for them so the beads wouldnât roll off the table, but I wasnât able to get anything like that locally. I had twenty on order, but it was going to be another week or two before they arrived, so we needed to be careful.
