According to Kelly, each section or couplet contains an antithesis: flesh/Spirit (lines 1-2), angels/nations (lines 3-4), world/glory (lines 5-6).22 He argues that the first two lines concern the incarnation and the resurrection; the second concerns Christ’s manifestation to angels and his proclamation to the nations; the third pertains to the reception of Christ in the world and heaven. Kelly’s argument is persuasive and makes good sense of the form and content. Capitalizing on Kelly’s view that the hymn consists of three couplets, several others observe that each couplet has a “spatial” contrast.23 By spatial, we mean the contrast between the old age or “earth” and the new creation or “heaven”:
