But back aboard the Constellation, things were equally grim. The carrier needed more than damage control for repair; it was gravely wounded and required a major overhaul. In addition, it had lost many starfighters that were on board, which at the time were under maintenance or readiness. The loss of life had to be considered as the most grievous problem to repair.

Gallant didn’t want to hear the damage reports and the death toll. It seemed cruel to bring him back to consciousness only to have him face his deepest fears. He felt as if he were in a maze and was just about to turn the final corner to freedom, when wham, he’s at a dead-end, fallen back upon himself and lost again.

In less than five minutes, fires caused several missile and rocket warheads in the ammunition storage lockers to explode. The ongoing detonations prevented fire suppression efforts during the first critical minutes. The explosions killed fifty. One hundred and forty-one more crew members were killed in other compartments. The conflagration destroyed fighters, blew a hole in the armored flight deck, and sprayed the deck. Burning fuel poured through the hole in the deck into berthing compartments below. Several fully fueled and bomb-laden starfighters caught fire.

Two more explosions ignited shortly after the first, and a fourth blew up seconds after that. Bodies and debris were hurled as far as the bow. An officer recoiled in stunned dismay as burning torches tumbled toward him. Screams stirred him to action. Several men jumped or were blown into space.

Personnel from all over the ship rallied to fight the fires. Damage control teams swarmed over critically damaged areas.

Time went by as workers fell to their task of revitalizing the ship. Electricians, fitters, machinists, welders, and mechanics began performing surgery on the Constellation. The XO was coordinating all the activities to keep the pace at maximum. Sparks showered in high arcs, and the rat-tat of mechanical actions went unabated.

Whether the Constellation would be fit for action was more a matter of time than not. The deck integrity was being restored, and hatches were being replaced. Structural hull armor sheets were being moved into position. The clock was running faster to get after the enemy.

The game wasn’t over.
