CHAPTER 6
The Living of Hegel and Negation: Kristeva, Nancy, Agamben, Žižek, Malabou
It is impossible to read contemporary appropriations and figurations of Hegelâs negation without going through the prism of the Derrida we have tried, in a dangerously foreshortened manner, to configure in the previous chapter. For as Derrida himself exemplified, any taking up of Hegel and his negation is always both a re-appropriation and a dis-appropriation, a re-figuration and a dis-figuration, any of which can be made only through another. This alter-ation might in fact be another Hegel, but now a Hegel as the Aufhebung to himself, which always manifests itself in another thinker. Such an Aufhebung â the cogenitivity within âthe Aufhebung of Hegelâ â has a long nineteenth- and twentieth-century history (Kierkegaard, Marx, Feuerbach, Kojève, Bataille, Heidegger, Sartre, Hyppolite, Blanchot, Adorno, Derridaâ¦), and it tells us something about the history of Hegel: history works by negation. If we have arrived now at a living history, a history made present in figures still living, this only says that the present negation is itself historical, and must be read through its history. Derrida is now a spectral figure in this history, a spirit who remains behind each of the thinkers we now (selectively and briefly) turn to, even if their own work is elsewhere to Derrida, or elsewhere to his Hegel.
