Chapter 5

Heath didn’t want to admit that he was sore. In fact, every time he moved around and pulled another place in his body that ached, he had to smile. Christ, they’d been animals last night. Pulling the bassinet toward him to put Emma back and take George from it, he looked over at Angel and Mary. They were looking at a magazine that had come in the mail today.

“Have you found anything in there that you want Santa to bring you for Christmas?” Mary told him not to be daft. There wasn’t a Santa Claus. “Who told you that? Of course, there is one. He is right now figuring out what you want for Christmas. You can help him along by marking the things you see there in that toy magazine.”

Angel rolled her eyes, not even hiding the fact that she thought he was nuts. It was all he could manage not to burst out laughing at her. When George was finished with his bottle and burped, he laid him in the little crib with his sister. The two of them immediately reached for each other.

Standing up to stretch, he saw that the older girls were still thumbing through the catalog, so he left them to it to see about lunch. Paige had left an hour ago to meet up with Harris and James. He was ready to get going on a couple of things he had in the works too. Grandda showed up just as he was putting corndogs on a plate for Mary and her sister.

“What on earth is that thing?” He told his grandda what the kids were eating. “You’re kidding me. A hotdog wrapped up in cornbread. Sounds like a good waste of cornmeal if you ask me.” Of course, the girls were delighted with their great grandda.

“Would you like one?” Of course, the face he made had all three of them laughing hard enough to make Heath remember his sore body. Asking what Grandda wanted gave his ribs a chance to rest and him to sit again. “When are you leaving for the cruise? I wish I could go with you, Grandda. You guys are going to have a blast.”

“I surely hope so. I’m really looking forward to it. The reason I’m here is to ask you if you’d mind having a look in on the Older Than Dirt Club for me.” Heath asked him if that was the name he’d come up with for his workers. “Not me, but them guys did it. They said if they were going to be in a club, they wanted people to stay out of their business who wasn’t old like them. I’m older than all of them, and I surely think anyone looking at me would be able to see that.”

They both laughed as he got up to make Mary a second corn dog. “I don’t mind helping you out with that. So long as they understand, I’m not joining but making sure they have work to do.
