Chapter 9

Rendezvous in the Bay

Heart pounding, Frank fought for control of the van, but the wheel kept pulling to the left, directly into the path of the car.

“Turn to the right!” Joe shouted. “Fast!”

“I’m trying,” Frank cried in return, “but the wheel won’t turn.”

Instead of turning back into the right lane, Frank yanked the wheel as hard as he could in the opposite direction, toward the left-hand side of the road.

“What are you doing?” Joe yelled at his brother. “Are you crazy?”

Frank didn’t answer. Fortunately, the driver of the oncoming car saw what he was trying to do. The driver steered his vehicle into the lane that the Hardys had just swerved out of. The van passed the car on the left, within a hair’s breadth of its fender. Finally Frank brought the van to a screeching halt, right in the middle of the oncoming lane. Another car also squealed to a stop next to them. The driver leaned angrily on his horn, waving a fist out the window.

“Sorry,” Frank said, trying to catch his breath. “I did the best I could.”

“Whew!” Joe sank back into his seat. “I didn’t even have time to buckle my seat belt.”

“Next time do it before we pull out of the parking place,” Frank said. He pushed open his door and climbed out into the street. The front left tire of the van was completely blown. Joe and Frank exchanged looks of frustration, then pushed the van out of the way of traffic.

It took them fifteen minutes to replace the blown tire with a spare from the rear of the van. When they were done, Joe picked up the damaged tire and began to examine it.

“This wasn’t an accidental blowout,” he said, pointing to slash marks in the rubber tread. “Somebody tampered with this tire while we were in the WBBX building.”

“Why wasn’t it flat when we came out?” Frank asked. “I would have noticed when I climbed into the driver’s seat.”

“They probably slashed it just enough so that it would blow when we started driving,” Joe suggested.

“Which means that they weren’t just trying to give us a hard time,” Frank said.

“Right,” Joe said. “They wanted us to have an accident. Somebody was trying to knock us off the Skull and Bones case - the hard way.”

“Well,” Frank said, “that makes me more determined than ever to solve the case.”

Jimmy Collins wasn’t expecting the brothers back at Skull and Bones until the next morning at ten. The Hardys had the rest of the evening to check on other aspects of the case. After changing the sabotaged tire, they decided to head to the local library, to check out a few facts that had been bothering them.

“For instance,” Joe said as they entered the Bayport library, “who owns that warehouse down at the docks? Apparently, that’s where Steelhart has been getting those large barrels of fuel that he takes out to the S.S. Marconi. But I doubt that Steelhart owns it himself, or Jimmy Collins.”

“But it may belong to this mysterious J.
