I stand and look at them.

“I recall asking the Lord that very same question the morning of my calling, son,” Steve Thomas recalled for me under the blue awning of his idling Winnebago Adventurer, idling at the foot of the World’s Second Largest Cross, Groom, Texas, at noon.

“‘Why Groom, Texas?’ I asked the Lord.

“And son, it was at that moment that I remembered the true nature of the Church—that is, to be the Bride of Christ.

“After all, my son, if we the Church become the Bride of Christ, I think then that makes evident what the Lord will be to us!”

I recall sitting under the thick blue awning at Winnebago Adventurer Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ Church one Tuesday noon in ’96, debating whether or not to steal a cassette by Steve Thomas, a two-hour recorded sermon entitled “The Story of Our Cross: God’s Marriage to Texans.”

But I think, in the end, we’ll have to guess what matters.

This tape, for example, just might matter.

The Great State of Texas.

The Second Largest Cross.

Mother leaving Father after only eight months.

I might matter, for all you know, wheeling past fence posts with coyotes strung up like God.
