Chapter 8

Chase woke early, shoved Matt’s foot from his face, and climbed over Tom. They’d let Big John and Grandfather have the other two beds. Trying not to be too angry that he had a perfectly good bed with a wife in it, and yet had to sleep with his two brothers, he dressed.

He got up and had to shake off Matt’s boot. He knelt and found his other one stuffed way under the bed. Stomping his foot into it, he scowled at the thought of going into town and all the nosy people that would want to hear about their wedding.

She’d better come around quickly, because he couldn’t stand too many more nights stuffed in a bed with his brothers and surrounded by snores that’d scare a bear to death. He rubbed his hands, splashed water on his face, and turned toward the cabin.

His jaw dropped. Greta sat on the porch, dressed, and pretty as a sun kissed meadow. What’s more, she looked as if she’d been waiting for some time.

She waved. “I thought you said we would leave before the sun rose. I’ve watched it climb over the corral.”

He smothered the growl that wanted to erupt. “We have plenty of time. Doesn’t look like there’ll be any rain. I’ll hitch the horses, and we’ll leave in a few minutes.”

“I would have made you breakfast, but I couldn’t find anything to make.”

He didn’t answer but headed for the barn. How could he want her so bad and at the same time not want to be around her? Greta, you task me. He thought about yelling for his brothers to help, but he needed the time to work out his anger before they started the trip. Alone. Just her and him.

He shuddered. A shadow fell through the door opening, and Chase turned to see Big John. “Sorry if I woke you.”

“You didn’t. Thought I’d ride into town with you. I’ll ride my horse, though. Thought I’d keep an eye on you. Don’t want anything bad to happen to Greta.”

Chase glared at him. “She’s my wife. I won’t hurt her. Pa taught me better than that.”

“Glad to hear it. I wasn’t sure how much you remembered.” Big John picked up his saddle and gear. “My horse is in the meadow out back. I’ll meet you on the road.”

Chase didn’t answer. Big John didn’t take kindly to back talk and right about now, that’s about all he had for the big man. Checking to see how he treated his own wife. Just who did he think he was? And why would Big John think he’d hurt his own wife?

His thoughts turned to her sitting in the porch. Such a beauty. Lord help him he wanted her, but he’d wait until Greta wanted him, although by the disgusted look on her face, that could be some time. “Oh, Greta, you task me.”

Finished hitching the team, he waited a moment to cool his anger before going out to get her. Another shadow fell from the barn opening.
