Chapter Fourteen

Giana shut the lid on the coffeemaker and hit the start button just as Liz walked into the kitchen.

“Did you make enough for me, too?”

“Oh, hey, you. I didn’t realize you were home.” Giana switched the machine off and reached for the bag of coffee beans. She glanced at her roomie’s jeans and faded T-shirt. “Looks like somebody has the day off. I’m jealous.”

“Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.” Liz heaved a breezy sigh as she pulled out a chair and sat down. “My God, I hardly know what to do with myself. Call in sick, Gigi.” She poked her lips out in an exaggerated pout. “Stay home and play hooky with me instead.”

Giana set the grinder to whirring and seriously considered the idea. The workweek felt interminable, and it was far from over. Her spirits had not improved—indeed, her mood seemed to be growing steadily grimmer as the days trudged on. But she doubted even the unsinkable Elizabeth Talbot was enough to lift the malaise. “I’ll have to take a rain check on that, hon. It’s still a little soon for me to become an unreliable employee.”

“As if you ever could. Come on, sit down for a minute. I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever.”

Giana added more water to the reservoir and started the coffeemaker brewing again. She joined Liz at the little table, praying the conversation was not about to turn into an inquisition.

“So. How are things with the hottie?” Liz’s eyes were bright with anticipation.

Giana rubbed at her temples, convinced she felt a headache coming on. She didn’t know which hottie Liz was referring to—Remy or Nick—but at this point she wasn’t inclined to discuss either one of them. Her roommate continued to stare at her expectantly, and she sighed. “I’m afraid you’ll have to be more specific.”

“Hmm, good point.” Liz chuckled. “I’m talking about that tall drink of deliciousness I saw sitting on our living room couch the other day. Of course! How did that go? I swear, there was something cooking in the air between you two. My God. Talk about smoky bedroom eyes. I hate to break it to you, hon, but that police lady has the hots for you. No doubt about it.”

Giana lightly cleared her throat, and Liz’s nostrils flared like a bloodhound’s. “Wait. You already knew that, didn’t you?” Her eyes raked Giana’s face. “Did something—?”

“All right, yes,” Giana admitted. “We kissed, okay?”

Elizabeth gasped. “Oh…my God. I knew it!” Her mouth fell open and stayed there. It was almost enough to make Giana laugh. Almost. “Well, hell’s bells. Tell me! How was it? I mean, did you like it? Who made the first move? Remy did, of course. Big, beautiful daddy that she is.”

“Christ.” Giana stood up from the table. She grabbed two mugs from a cabinet and set them heavily down on the countertop. She stood at the coffeemaker and waited, watching the steaming trickle fill the pot. Her roommate had fallen blessedly silent behind her, and she took a moment to breathe.
