Gage

Pulling the door open with more force than necessary, I'm poised to let loose my irritation at being interrupted when it dies in my throat.

"Lennox?" The surprise is evident in my voice. The storm is raging, and the last face I expected to see was his. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Brushing rain off his forehead, EmergenSEA’s medic meets my gaze with determination and concern. "We were worried when you didn’t show up and didn’t answer any calls,” he says.

My brow furrows in confusion as I step aside to let him in. "Calls? What are you talking about?"

Lennox’s eyes narrow slightly, his eyebrows knitting together. “The team’s been trying to reach you. We started to think the worst when you didn't answer, especially with this storm.”

I feel a cold jolt of realization. Patting my pockets, it hits me. “Damn it. My phone and radio are still in the truck.” I run a hand through my wet hair, frustrated at my oversight.

Lennox nods slowly, then glances around. “And the power's out too?”

"Yeah," I confirm, rubbing the back of my neck. "Got cut off a while ago.”

His gaze shifts back to me, now mixed with a subtle accusation. "Why aren’t you on your way to the station?"

Sighing, I lean against the doorframe. "I was, but I saw a wreck on the way. Driver was hurt. Couldn't just leave her there."

“Her?” Lennox perks up, his eyes scanning the house. “Where is she now?”

I’m trying to come up with something to say when there’s a shuffling in the hallway. Lennox and I both turn and spot Jo, looking both shy and disarmingly beautiful. Her dark hair, usually cascading in neat waves down her back, is now a tousled mess. Her deep hazel eyes, flecked with green, avoid mine, but the flush on her cheeks speaks volumes. Her curves, which she's sometimes self-conscious about, are accentuated by her slightly disheveled attire.

There's a powerful tug of attraction, almost magnetic, but there’s also a thread of fear, a recognition of the depth of my connection with her and the weight of my duties. It's like standing on the edge of a precipice, simultaneously drawn to the view and scared of the fall.

Lennox's mischievous grin widens. "Well, well, Gage. I see you’ve gone above and beyond to care for your guest." He raises an eyebrow in a playful tease, but I can feel the heat rising in my face.

"She's just someone I helped out," I say quickly, too quickly. "Nothing happened. It's not important."

Jo's eyes meet mine for a fleeting second, and I see a flash of hurt, quickly masked. I regret the words as soon as they're out, but Lennox's presence makes it hard to think straight.

Thankfully, Lennox decides not to press further. "We could use you at the station. We have a few calls we still need to get to."

Taking a deep breath, I nod, trying to shove the weight of my guilt and mixed feelings aside. "Yeah, I'll come."

I steal a glance in Jo's direction.
