Chapter 22

‘Nan, have you got everything you need for the day?’ Mikey asked. ‘Are you sure you don’t want me to stay with you?’

‘I’m fine, dear,’ Veronica told him kindly. ‘Go off and have some fun, I’ll spend the day here on the sun lounger with my book. I expect I’ll end up having a few naps and a dip in the pool. Plus, I need to call your father and tell him about the apartment, which won’t go down very well. That could take some time.’

As she got comfortable, she did wonder if she should get the phone call over with first, but then decided to enjoy the sunshine and think about what she had to say. Was she completely sure she was doing the right thing? Yes, of course, because it wasn’t just for her. Mikey had worked so hard at school and university and this would be a huge opportunity for him. What would Frank have to say about it all? That made her smile. He would be saying ‘go for it, old girl, what else are you going to do? Just mope around, thinking of the past? Have some fun!’ She wasn’t sure about the fun, but certainly the sunshine helped.

As the morning went on, she did have a swim and read a little of her book. She headed over to the pool bar for a coffee and decided to sit in the shade to make her phone call.

She was dithering, putting it off. Picking up her phone and putting it down again, she wondered if she should wait until later. Just as she stood up, someone bumped into her. They seemed to be in a real hurry.

‘I’m so sorry!’ the woman exclaimed. ‘Did I hurt you?’

‘No, my dear, I wasn’t paying much attention to what I was doing. We were both to blame.’

As Veronica made her way back around the pool and through the garden to her lounger, the woman was going the same way.

‘I’m Veronica,’ she introduced herself. ‘Nice to meet you. I’ve not seen you around, are you a new arrival?’

‘Yes, I’m Amanda. I’m here with my boyfriend,’ Amanda broke off. ‘Sorry, that sounds dreadful, like something a teenager would say. I’m here with a gentleman friend, his daughter is one of the managers here at the hotel.’

Veronica realised in a rush who she was talking to. She couldn’t let Amanda walk away, she needed to find out more. They got to Veronica’s sun lounger, and she asked Amanda if she wanted to join her for a chat, that she could fill her in on the hotel and area.

‘Thank you, that would be nice,’ Amanda said, settling next to her. ‘I could do with a break from my friend, anyway.’

Veronica knew she couldn’t just dive in with a hundred questions. Instead, she shared lots of information about the restaurant and the bars, a little bit about herself and Mikey, but she didn’t mention buying the apartment. Now she wanted to know more about Amanda.
