Chapter Seven

As soon as Allie heard the news of Colleen’s death, she asked Brenda who should tell Harry.

“He was looking for her a few minutes ago. He mentioned that he had a little too much to drink last night and wasn’t sure if she even came in or not.”

“I’ll come home and tell him, Allie. Please ask him to wait until I get there if he decides to go look for her.”

When the call ended, Glen Adams walked in the front door. Allie looked at him and frowned. She was sure he wore the same clothes he had on the afternoon before. She’d had a short conversation with him then and he had told her he looked forward to the rest of the celebrations.

“It looks like you had a long night of celebrations, Glen,” Harry said. He came from the Gathering Room with a cup of coffee in his hand. “I’d say you overdid it. Are you just now getting in?”

Glen produced a sheepish smile. “I came in last night before most did. I was bushed and went right to bed. I’ve been down on the beach still trying to wake up.” Harry commented that he looked as if he had slept on the beach. Glen ignored the remark.

Either Harry hadn’t noticed or chose to ignore it, but no one mentioned the fact that the fireman wore the same clothing as the day before. Melissa came from the hall that led to the kitchen. She cupped a mug of hot chocolate in her hands and looked at Glen. Her eyes met Allie’s. She validated by her expression that they agreed he hadn’t changed clothes. Allie wondered if he had slept in them or if he really ever went to bed.

Allie caught Harry before he went out the door. “Brenda asked me to have you wait here for her, Harry. She’ll be here in a few minutes.”

“I hope she’s seen Colleen. It will save me time searching for her. She’s not answering her phone.” Harry sat in the antique loveseat that was set against the wall. Allie smiled at him. He obviously had no idea his wife was dead. Then he stood up again.

“I think I’ll take a walk outside. I’ll stick close by, Allie, until Brenda gets here.”

“I’ll let her know where you are.”

Glen weaved a little to gain his balance and then slowly walked up the stairs. Once he was out of earshot, Allie said to Melissa, “Glen looks like he’s had quite a night of it.”

Melissa shook her head. “It’s weird. Glen left us early last night. He said he was coming back here to go to bed. I thought he faked his yawn when he was leaving us. I wonder where he spent the night.”

“I have no idea. I do know he is wearing the same clothes he had on yesterday when I saw him. I guess he could have changed out of them before the festivities last night and just put them back on this morning.”

Melissa chuckled.
