As planned, Feldwebel Niedermeier sent Drucks to the north across the open area of the fort to find Leutnant Witzig and to report success at objective 18 (Ma 2). While the fallschirmjäger sections were attacking the casemates and reorganising, the pilots who were not herding prisoners of war laid out aircraft identification panels alongside the captured casemates. These were signals for the Stukas, which were on call to support Sturmgruppe Granit should they fail to knock out specific casemates.
