Chapter twenty-three

I looked at the blood on the sheet without understanding why Theo did it, getting hurt on purpose, then leaving me alone in the room. I confess that I had prepared for a completely different night from the one that took place and knew even less how to act now. I slipped into the room where I had been sleeping for the last few days, and I took off that awful outfit before switching to light pants and a T-shirt.

As I returned to Theo's room, wondering what I should do, I saw Marco approaching, and he immediately turned to me as I went into his field of view.

"How was the night with my brother yesterday?”

"It was..." I took a breath. “It was...” I couldn't answer how to tell the head of the family that the brother hadn't even laid a finger on me after my teasing the night before.

"You are no longer a virgin, you are no longer a girl, and now you are a married woman. You must honor your vows.”

I swallowed it dry and just shook my head, not knowing how to react. He walked past me and walked down the hall.

I went into the room, thinking about his words. I wonder what Theo told his brother. When I began to reflect on Marco thinking I was no longer a virgin, I looked at the bed and saw from afar the drops of blood on the sheet, and I was surprised to come to a conclusion why Theo had done that. I was still a virgin, but only my husband and I knew that.

I decided to go back to my room and looked for my cell phone, calling Angela as soon as I found it. This time it didn't take long for my sister-in-law to pick up.

"Hi, Tatiane, how are you? I thought you were going to be busy all day.”

"I've had a quiet day.”

“Is everything all right?”

“Yes. I just wanted to know if you and the boys are still here in Rome.”

"Yes, we are. I have a meeting with Marco in a little while to tell him how the mafia business is going in Palermo.”

"You mean you are coming here?”

"Yes, after lunch. I will take the boys for a walk around town first. It's the first time they've come to Rome.”

"You're going to have a lot of fun.”

"I hope so.”

"I'm going to let you go.”

"See you later, Tatiane.”

"See you later," I said goodbye to her and hung up the call.

I spent the rest of the day in the room and only came down when it was around lunchtime. They were all in the dining room, except for my husband. Quietly, I pulled up a chair and got comfortable on the other side of the table in front of my mother-in-law and near Laís. Everyone was eating, but Rosimeire lowered the cutlery and turned her attention to me; I really didn’t want to be noticed.

“Did you sleep well?”

I shook my head in the affirmative and took a plate to serve myself.
