Chapter 5

I can’t be a free agent on this one.

The boy is so young, too young. I can’t let him be exposed to the wraith. That is one image which never leaves the mind of someone from Midgard. Other transdimensional beings and even gods are easy to pass off with doubt. But there is something about wraiths… I must work quickly.

“Let’s read this together,” I say as I hold the card up for him to read.

“Instwuctions?” he asks.

“Exactly. Here.” I point at the words on the card. “For help, call Loki.”

“For help, call Loki,” he repeats. “Are you Loki?” There is such innocence in his voice. He has no mythological basis built into him yet to understand who I am, to believe he should dread me. There is only trust.

“I am,” I reply.

“Are we in twouble? Danger?”

His words, his little voice, break my heart. He’s seen enough during his short time on Midgard to know of fear, to know that humans can be cruel to each other. But I know this is so much bigger, so much more dangerous.

“Mattie!” I hear a deep voice of the wraith’s body call out.

“We’ll bring her out to you, Mr. Carlson,” I hear the woman up front say. But there are heavy footsteps coming through the changing room already. The wraith is having difficulties maneuvering his physical body. His panic isn’t helping and I can feel the power of it from where I kneel. Which means my charmed child feels everything too.

Martin looks scared, his fear so pure. He is trying to see around me to find out what’s coming up behind. I lean so he can’t get a view. The sight of a wraith losing its body is not an image I want to leave with this child.

“Do you accept?” I ask.

“Huh?” Martin says and I realize my question had been vague.

“Take the card, boy!”

I hold it out. I can’t force it into his hand. He has to take it.

There’s no time. I haven’t even found the doll yet. Why hadn’t I stayed in the front room and handed the card to one of the women there? That really was a stupid move, Loki, I chide myself. It’s not as if I can fly around the world and reverse time, so I have to keep moving forward.

Martin ducks under his blankets.

“I can help you if you’ll take the card,” I say, desperate now.

The child reaches a hand out from beneath the blanket, swiping blindly in the air. But I’m quick. I flip the card so it contacts with his palm. His little fingers curl around it. “Can I help you?” I ask quickly.

“Yes.”

I am already on my feet, turning around, though I hear the gasp come from beneath the boy’s blanket. I know the calling card has vanished. Magic indeed. I need my scepter and it comes to my hand. I hold it up, intending on freezing the door. My actions are cut short as Martin begins to scream. I chance a glance down and find him scrambling from beneath his blanket.
