HITTING BOTTOM: I NEED HELP!
The “moment of lucidity” when addicts decide it is time to get off the bus that is hurtling toward their own destruction — this is the very moment when people struggling with addiction decide that the pain of using their drug outweighs the pain of trying to stop using it. How will you know when you have hit your bottom? How bad does it have to get?
Surprisingly, many addicts long for this moment to occur. They keep using, but at the same time hoping that they will finally get it, they will finally find the motivation, the control — the something that will propel them to change their behaviour. What is this magical moment that some describe as a spiritual awakening? What does it look like for a food addict?
The moment of clarity is different for everyone. For one person, it might be when he no longer can be weighed at the hospital because there is no scale that registers higher than 350 pounds. At that moment, he refuses to live with the shame any longer. For another person, it’s that moment when she realizes that her partner is no longer willing to live with her binge-induced mood swings and lack of sex drive. Many addicts may never find their bottom, and, as we have seen with Lawrence and Walter in earlier chapters, they will remain prisoners of their addiction until death takes them.
So, for those who do find their bottom, how bad did it have to get? Here are our own personal stories, showing how unique and powerful each bottom can be.
