Chapter 18

Lex

The hair on my neck bristled when we entered the massive stone enclosure of the Arena. They’d shown us our quarters a few minutes earlier. Far from the high loft where Lyra was being housed, we were living in huts off a central, outdoor living space, complete with firepit.

I can’t say I minded.

I’d never slept alone before, or in a room alone and it felt good. When I was lonely, I could step out to the firepit and spend time with anyone else who wanted to talk. The fire itself filled my chest with a thrum of movement and energy that made me smile. We had been around lava before, but this is where oxygen created flame.

My heart yearned for it.

We had checked out our huts and spent some time by the fire before heading up toward the Arena. There wasn’t anything I liked about the Arena. Under the control of the eVols, we were going to be placed into combat with monsters. The last humans we’d seen fighting against the dragons didn’t fare so well. But it wasn’t what worried me the most. We’d been forced to leave Lyra alone and unprotected in the center of the slimy eVol aquarium. She thought I supported the eVols, but she was wrong. I thought they were our best chance at staying alive and staying together.

But now we were apart, so maybe I was wrong.

A tiny gnat buzzed by my ear and I swatted it away. I already felt tense enough without having to think about a malicious little fly bugging me. They were going to put us into this Arena to fight a beast. I glanced over at Maxwell who was ice cold frozen, staring at the corridor in front of us, which would lead us into the bowels of the Arena.

“You can’t expect us to go in there and battle that thing,” Maxwell looked ludicrously at Octavia.

“Oh, it’s exactly what we expect you to do.” The sprite buzzing at my ear spoke. It was Jadhe, Queen of the Sprites. She flitted away, throwing back her little head in laughter.

I ignored her. “You’re battling five of us to one dragon?” I raised an eyebrow at Octavia. “I think I’d prefer it one-on-one. Poor little dragon is way outnumbered. It’d be outgunned if it were just the beast against me.”

“Nice try, alpha,” Octavia said. “But you’re all five going in the Arena together.”

“If you’re trying to find out who’s the strongest of us is, I can tell you,” Harrison said stepping forward and showing off his guns.

“You’re going to wrestle a dragon?” Vash laughed.

“Well, you can’t punch it in the face and knock it out,” Harrison retorted. “It’s not a punching bag. It has teeth.”

“And scales,” Byron nodded his bright red mop of hair.

“Your jokes aren’t going to work on it,” Harrison continued. “And Maxwell isn’t going to be able to think his way out of this and make some trinket.”

“Stop.” I glared at them. They were so brave not even one was scared to go in and face the dragon alone, but it wasn’t going to solve the problem.
